Born in Dresden, Matthias Lutze received extensive training in ensemble singing as a child and young adult, first in the Dresden Kreuzchor and later in the Windsbach Boys’ Choir. Since then, he has been fascinated by singing together. After studying at the Dresden University of Music, the soloist and ensemble singer was active in the independent scene for many years and was a member of renowned ensembles, most notably the Collegium Vocale Gent under Philippe Herreweghe. He is also a permanent member of the Ensemble Polyharmonique, a collective of vocal soloists specializing in Renaissance and Baroque vocal music. He regularly develops exciting solo programs with renowned instrumentalists. In addition to his musical passion, the singer is also involved in artistic photography and can be found paddling his folding boat on Berlin’s lakes in his spare time. Matthias Lutze has been a permanent member of the bass section of the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin since 2018.

What does it mean to you to be part of the RIAS Kammerchor Berlin?

It must have been in 1997. I was a young male voice in a boys’ choir, and it was at that moment that I began to discover a vast number of recordings by renowned vocal ensembles from all over the world. At some point, I got my hands on the Bach motets CD with the RIAS Chamber Choir. What I heard on it impressed me deeply: the sound, the handling of the text, the expression, and what musicality!
